Tragic Therapy in Walla Walla

A Happy Grace in childhood.
Our adult child in postpartum depression and medicated with antidepressants sought help while living 2000 miles away in Walla Walla, Washington.  A long discredited therapy now known to create horrid fantasies was used to help her with her struggles.  The fantasies generated by the therapy were once thought to be "repressed memories" are now known by experts to often be false memories of events that never happened or "pseudo memories".    Our daughter's therapist, life coach and/or friend(s) using "Do it Yourself Therapy Books" or one of the misguided "prayer ministries" used suggestion, imaging techniques, medication and blackouts to nurture horrid false accusations.  The fraudulent approach to mental health is debunked by the knowledgeable but still used in "treatment centers" (such as Castlewood Treatment Center) supported by insurance payouts or by churches using debunked prayer therapies (such as Theophostic Prayer Ministry) using church support.  These memory based therapies often doing great harm to individuals and families have resulted in lawsuits that still continue thirty years after being debunked and found harmful.  The federal courts no longer accept testimony emerging from memory based therapies because of the high likelihood of generating unreliable  false testimonies thought to be true by the unfortunate clients (often mentally ill).
We know, in addition to medication, that implemented "memory recovery" techniques were used and created false memories in our daughter.  This information was revealed by eye witnesses, those who were in Walla Walla at the time, in written statements. They were also described by our daughter in online published accounts (Facebook).   These accounts were seen and screen captured by friends who were shocked and concerned for my daughter.
Immediately upon our return home in June of 2015 my husband self reported to designated authorities.  He informed his immediate supervisor.  We also informed our pastor of the accusations in a joint meeting.   My husband was then asked to be interviewed with a representative of his employer.  Following the interview he was asked to submit accounts to an official representative of the institution for review.  My husband offered to be fully investigated by his employer and the police.  Following the interview, copies of the bizarre Facebook posts by our daughter were provided to the official representative who documented the accusations.  We also spoke with a lawyer for over 3 hours who informed us the the use of "repressed memories" had long been discredited and in fact reliance on them was an indication of case weakness and a reason to have all charges dismissed.  Statements by friends and family in a position to know of the pseudo-events recollected were offered to all concerned authorities but were declined based on the interview and content of the Facebook submissions.
In spite of the support of family and friends, my husband, myself, our siblings and accusing daughter were all truly victimized like many hundreds of thousands others by this fraudulent approach to mental health.
We were fortunate because my husband of 40 years and I had 5 other children, 3 prior and 2 after Grace. Several people who had lived with our family over the years during the time of the allegations could vouch for the care and love we provided our daughter in her formative years.  Her fantasized abuse may have derived from reaction to medications, confabulated memories, source confusion, influenced by horrid media depictions, suggestive sessions, entrancement, social pressure of "friends" and/or well known "do it yourself therapy books" that are associated with false memories.  The historical fact is that these horrid repulsive events never actually happened.
Happy in her childhood
In 2016 Grace's husband's ex-wife read this blog and recognized that she had experienced implantation of false memories of childhood abuse that led to her estrangement from her family while married to the same man previously.  Family members of the ex-wife supplied written statements that described the false memories and estrangement which lasted while she remained married to him.  Emails from Grace continued to offer bizarre fabrications and there was public defamation of numerous family members.  We displayed restraint and encouraged others to do so as well.
In 2017 as a result of the horrid event my husband resigned his position and decided to retire. He is now focused on serving the nuclear and extended family as well as researching ways to help those harmed by memory based therapies.  We are both also spending happy time with the nine (and more coming) grandchildren of 2 other families.
Other members of the extended and nuclear family have had episodes of impaired judgements and mental illness.  My husband and I did extensive research on the metabolic problems that underlie those experiences.  We have obtained blood, hair and urine analysis for 12 family members and found metabolic issues the cause the episodes!  Today, as we write, numerous family members have been helped and are now recovering or are fully recovered from the metabolic problems we now know our family has.  Unfortunately Grace's husband has told us not to communicate with his wife.  They continue to cling to the delusions and hallucinations common to those with untreated metabolic issues our family can have.
In 2019 Grace's step-daughter (from her husband's previous marriage) generated false accusations of abuse against the present husband of the ex-wife.  This resulted in another investigation that once again found the accused person innocent.  A family court ruled that trust was violated and both visitation and joint custody were to be terminated between Grace and her present husband with the children of his ex-wife.  The pattern of creating false memories and false accusations is now documented.  The fact that they we duped into believing in a false approach to healing, used suggestive techniques to foster false memories and accusations does not mean it was intentional.  They actually may have bought into the false approaches of "healing" now debunked by experts but still popular among the uninformed.  We hope this will awaken her, her husband and those around her to the horrors and deception that memory based therapies ferment.  We realize that delusions like these are very difficult to release.
Experts have long established how pseudo memories are maintained once nurtured and we hope that those around her are help free our daughter from the shackles of these induced fantasies.   We are also now convinced that she to is mentally ill and needs to be physically assisted with a somatic (appropriate medication) and cognitive therapy.  Our daughter continues to "cut off" siblings, parents, grand parents and genuine friends who chose to maintain exchanges based on what they know is the truth.  Her outreach has consistently been to nurture false suspicions or horrid false memories.  Her husband has threatened legal action if we attempt contact.  Surrounded and communicating only with those who support her delusions by people who do not know us adds to the likelihood that she will remain deluded.  We hope that a shrinking circle of friends will eventually deflect the delusions and help her return to the truth.  Grace was always cared for, loved, treated with respect and cherished.
In spite of the bizarre and false memories brought on by her progressing metabolic illness and this errant counseling technique we love our daughter and her family.  We will never give up on reconciliation and pray for a miracle.  We are not allowed to communicate with her be we are still allowed to hope!
