Carefully done studies has collected evidence and found that therapy relying on "repressed memories" (or similar ideas with different names) does in fact cause great personal and family harm while often creating often fictitious memories using unintended or intended suggestion.

Recent studies confirm that there appears to be an  increase among clinical psychologists who practice but believe in the long debunked idea about memory . The preeminent psychologists and researchers demonstrate that the scientifically controversial concept of dissociative amnesia, which is a substitute term for memory repression, has gained in popularity.  The study reviews the adverse side effects of the psychotherapeutic techniques associated with the long discredited repressed memories.  The article concludes there are damaging consequences in clinical, legal, and academic contexts. . A female claiming rape jailed two different male cab drivers.  Physical evidence was found to contradict details of the accusations and the accused DNA did not match the sample.  The accuser claim of a false memory was not in the distant past.  So physical evidence was never found and available electronic surveillance contradicted the "memory" claimed by the accuser (who was jailed) . Observed stretch areas on children were once assumed to be evidence of sexual abuse.  New science confirms that such marks can be the result of nromal acitivity like riding horses, vigorous swinging or climbing "monkey bars".   Numerous convictions relied ENTIRELY on this evidence to support accusations based on psuedomemories of abuse.  So far 58 innocents have been found falsely convicted and imprisoned between 1994 and 1998 and were released starting in 2004.  One was in prison for 27 years.
