Lecture: Memory Matters

World renowned scientist, Academy of Science member, highly sought after courtroom expert Dr. Loftus shares conclusion after 40 years of study:

"Just because memory
is expressed with
confidence, detail, and emotion,
doesn't mean that it's true."

If you are pressed for time go to 56 minutes where she begins a summary and final remarks. Dr. Loftus points out in this section:
1. "Repressed memories" myth has contributed to great injustice.
2. People most susceptible to false memory are those low in intellectual ability and high in cooperativeness (though even the highest intellects are vulnerable to false memories especially if medicated)
3. People are also vulnerable to creating a memory that fits into a bias they already have.
4. Theoretical Implications: Evidence overwhelmingly indicates that memory in malleable
5. Practical Implications: Can decide guilt and/or diet
6. Ethical Considerations: Now that we know how to plant should we?

In this video a famous memory expert, Elizabeth Loftus, points out that "repressed memories" are a fictional myth that has contributed to injustice.
Dr. Loftus she can confidently say after 40 years of study that
"Just because memory is expressed with
confidence, detail, and emotion,
doesn't mean that it's true."

Post talk question and answer:
What is the value of a "Suggestibility/Susceptibility Test" to establish if a person has was vulnerable to developing a false memory?
Dr. Loftus indicated that she has seen some courtroom experts try to bolster the case of an accuser by using the test and she has very low confidence in the test.  What does it add to the situation?  She indicated that it doesn't matter that the memories aren't supported, are bizarre, implausible, unfounded and with no corroborating evidence?
        "We all have false memories."

*** WARNING ***
If you are seeking help for personal struggles and a therapist, counselor or friend says that "recovering childhood memories can help you get better" then IMMEDIATELY get up from your chair (or off the couch), run to the door, open it and flee. Hundreds of thousands have lost families, years of productive living and squandered immense wealth with tragedy inducing therapy that produces horrid false memories, splinters families, isolates the client and is documented to cause decline in mental health.
